A romantic gift for those who love Venice! This copper ornament comes with its history on the back of the box: This hand wrought copper Lion of St. Marks ornament is the symbol of Venice. I was inspired to make it after seeing a small wooden statue of St. Mark in the Maritime Museum in Venice. St. Mark is almost always holding a book, and this is the only instance I’ve seen of him holding a sword. His face is inspired by another statue across the canal at the Arsenal where they built the boats for the Doge. There are four second-century stone lions that guard the entrance. One lost its head and they placed a seventeenth century head on it. The face of this lion looks so like Michelangelo’s David; but in lion form. They look like brothers. Made in the USA by Carrie Fertig. 10x8x3cm (4x3x1"). One of my production copper pieces.
